Today, Bernie Sanders rolled out what experts and media are calling the most comprehensive, far-reaching and progressive climate plan of any candidate in the race. In response, Joe Biden’s campaign supported the successful effort to block a climate-focused Democratic presidential debate.

Bernie’s plan — which you can read here — was widely praised, and was covered in The New York TimesBuzzfeedPoliticoThe HillUSA Today and CNN. Acclaimed climate author and activist Naomi Klein wrote that Bernie’s plan “has massively moved the goal posts. This is what it means to treat the climate crisis like a true emergency and build an economy that cares for people and Earth at the same time. “

At the very moment Bernie’s plan was gaining big praise, Biden’s top campaign aide “urged the DNC on Thursday to vote down a climate debate, saying it would be ‘dangerous territory in the middle of a Democratic primary process,” according to The Huffington Post. The Biden aide said approving a special climate-focused debate would be “dangerous territory in the middle of a Democratic primary process,” according to the San Jose Mercury News.

The proposal for a climate-focused presidential debate was then blocked.

The Biden’ campaign’s move follows Reuters previously reporting that Biden is focused on “carving out a middle ground approach” on climate change, despite scientists dire warnings that we need an aggressive Green New Deal. One of Biden’s climate policy advisers “occupied a lucrative seat on the board of the Texas-based liquified natural gas company Cheniere Energy,” reported Sludge, a campaign finance-focused investigative journalism outlet.
